What is Ozone?

Ozone (O3) consists of three oxygen atoms.  It is produced in nature by sunlight and lightning. Ozone is a very reactive gas that causes the clean-air odor.

Passing ambient air over an UV lamp can produce Ozone.  The UV energy from the lamp(s) splits the oxygen molecules (O2) into oxygen atoms (O).  The free oxygen atoms combine with other oxygen molecules from the air stream to form Ozone (O3).  This method produces Ozone outputs in the ranges of 0.01-weight percentage, or wt%, (100 ppm) to 0.1 wt% (1000 ppm).  The method does not require any feed gas air-preparation systems.  UV systems are suitable for use in residential pools and spas.  They produce enough Ozone to be effective and tend to cost less than Corona Discharge (CD) systems which require special air-preparation and cooling systems.

How It Works

When the pool pump is on, ambient air containing oxygen (O2) is drawn across our exclusively designed Ultra Violet lamps.  The Ultra Violet emission breaks the oxygen molecules into individual oxygen atoms.  These atoms combine with other oxygen molecules to form Ozone (O3).

The ozonated air is pulled into the pool water on the suction side of the pump as it operates.  The impeller creates small bubbles and the Ozone is pressurized into the water in the pipe between the pump and the filter.  The filter acts as a reaction vessel in which the Ozone breaks down organic compounds (lotions, oils, cosmetics, etc.) and alters ammonia compounds (urine and perspiration) making them unable to combine with and use up Chlorine.

Since the only element added by the Ozone generator is oxygen, no obnoxious compounds (like chloramines) are created, and many bi-products simply ‘gas off’.

Why Use Ozone?

Ozone and chlorine differ in how they oxidize other compounds.  At pool or spa residual levels, chlorine becomes incorporated into the compound.  This chemically alters the compound.  In this fashion, chlorine combines with organic compounds in the water.  These organic compounds include body oils, suntan lotions, cosmetics, dead algae and bacteria.  These reactions consume a lot of chlorine – and chlorine is no longer available to function as a biocide and residual.  The altered chlorinated organic compounds (combines) form scum lines and greases that clog filters, (remove) and form layers with calcium carbonated which result in the formation of soft-scale.

At operating residual levels, chlorine also combines with nitrogen-containing compounds to form chloramines. Chloramines are less effective biocides than the killing forms of chlorine.  Chloramines are responsible for the eye and skin irritations associated with chlorinated water.  The formation of chloramines consumes considerable amounts of the free available chlorine.  More chlorine needs to be added to establish a sufficient free chlorine residual in the water, a process known as “superchlorination” or “shocking”.

Ozone acts as a primary oxidizer, not as a disinfectant or biocide.  Disinfection is achieved by maintaining a free available chlorine or bromine residual.  Because Ozone is a more powerful oxidizing reagent than chlorine, Ozone reacts with organic or nitrogen containing compounds faster.  Ozone does not combine with other compounds; instead, it causes the organic and nitrogen compounds to break apart.  The smaller molecules are more water soluble, and some can even gas-off.  Amine compounds are altered so that they no longer combine with chlorine.  Ozone stops the buildup of chlorinated organic and amine compounds and does not form combines.

To summarize, chlorine’s biocidal and residual properties are excellent, and in pool and spa water, chlorine is the primary biocide and the free available residual.  Ozone is the primary oxidizer.  Ozone increases chlorine’s effectiveness as a biocide and residual.

Without Ozone, the homeowner uses much more chlorine to keep a free available residual and requires “superchlorination” or “shocking” compounds and other specialty chemicals to treat problems caused by pool oxidation by chlorine.

Benefits Of Ozone

UltraPure™ Ozone generators create the following:

· A nature fresh bottled-water swimming/bathing experience

· Cost savings, fewer chemicals and less maintenance

· Extended life of equipment and longer filter runs

UltraPure™ Ozonated water eliminates:

· Red eyes or skin irritation

· “Chlorine” allergic reaction

· After use showers, shampoos, or sin moisturizers

· “Chlorine” smell

· No Green hair

and offers:

Simply crystal clear, healthy and often “azure” blue water

The Fewest Chemicals

Chlorine usage is lowered by 60% to 70% on pool (and 80% to 90% on spas), as are pH adjusting chemicals.

The need for the following chemicals is virtually eliminated:

                                                           · “Shock Treatments”    · Scale Inhibitors

                                                           · Clarifiers                       · Scum Line Cleaners

                                                           · Algaecides                   · Scents

                                                           · Filter Aids                     · Filter Degreasers

The Least Work

Water balance is easily maintained. Filter runs are longer, since clogging greases and oils are broken down. Scum line or bathtub rings are kept away or easily brushed off. Overall pool and spa water maintenance and care are minimized – UltraPure™ Automatic Water Cleaner™ is an automatic water cleaner that pays for itself.

Menu Management Approach™

Pure, Sparkling Water the way Mother Nature intended

Introducing the Menu Management Approach, a complete system for natural water purification

The Menu Management System for pool water sanitation is a simple three-part system. By using natural elements for a majority of the pool water sanitizing, the need for chlorine in your pool will be reduced significantly. Because the problems with chlorine are virtually eliminated, the need for shock treatments, pH adjuster and other expensive specialty chemicals will also be drastically reduced. The result is natural, sparkling clean water today and for years to come.

Why Less Chlorine is Better

Chlorine, the grandparent of the pool water sanitizers, has two major shortfalls. It is a poor oxidizer and tends form all sorts of obnoxious compounds in the water. These “combined chlorine” compounds cause eye irritation, and bad odors. Chlorine is also deactivated by sunlight, even in pools with proper stabilizer (cyanuric acid) levels. These two weaknesses waste up to 90% of the chlorine added to pool water. Our Menu Management System for pool water sanitation provides the strongest oxidizer (Ozone) and “sunstable” biostatic minerals or an algicide to supplement chlorine’s weaknesses. These supplements do 80-90% of the work poorly done by chlorine. Chlorine’s primary role, in the menu, is to provide a measurable back-up sanitizer residual..

How a Mineral Based Biostat Works

A mineral based biostat will produce copper and silver ions at low concentration levels to stop algae and bacteria growth. An algicide is used to kill algae and molds at levels recommended by the manufacturer. In either case, these products are “sunstable” unlike chlorine. They will stay in the water much better than chlorine, allowing a lower residual of chlorine. Therefore a proportional amount of sunlight losses are avoided.

How an Ozone Generator Works

The UltraPure Pool Oxidizer converts naturally occurring oxygen into O3, also known as Ozone. The Ozone is mixed with the swimming pool water, ridding it of non-living contaminants, e.g. lotions, oils, make-up and ammonia compounds. Therefore this oxidation work is no longer required by the chlorine in the pool water. The chlorine demand is then lowered (by up to 70%). The need for shock and expensive specialty chemicals is virtually eliminated.

The Advantages of the Menu Management Approach™ are:

  • sparkling, polished looking pool water

  • a silky smooth swimming experience

  • 80 – 95% reduction of chlorine, shock and expensive specialty chemicals

  • the fewest chemicals of any system

  • near automatic, preventive pool water care
